“Metal Mail”

 “Metal Mail”

I have to admit that Flying Unicorn has the most unique and creative OTP projects. I knew we were getting a mailbox and had a dream about it. I knew exactly what I was going to do before it even came. Metal, metal and more metal.

Here is the process: (lots of pictures)

mail prep

Unfortunately I could not find the DH’s tin snips. So I dug this out of the garage.

mail prep 2

I cut around where the legs would be and started to paint the inside while my legs were drying.

mail prep 4

Left Side: I didn’t want them to look alike so I did off set more to the back on this side.

mail prep 1000

Left Side: I really wanted to add some texture to this once shiny, smooth box so I used some Prima texture paste. I also figured it would help the metal adhere better.

mail prep 3

Right side: clean slate lots of gesso.

mail prep 5

Starting to layer, and layer and more layering. I got to use some of my goodies from my good Uni-friend “Diva” I placed the clock hand perfectly on the flag.

mail prep 6

I normally place everything, take a picture and then reassemble with gel medium…This time I just went with it.

mail prep 7

I wanted to add some bling to the centers of the flower clusters but it just didn’t look right.

mail prep 8

So  I went with resin flowers instead.

mail prep 11

Starting so put some mica powder on after a thick layer of gesso. I deiced to go with some of the colors from the kit.

mail prep 17

I use hair clips to help hold the metal on because I can be impatient at times.

mail prep 13

And just because there is a handle on it now doesn’t mean it’s dry yet. oops.

mail prep 18

Here was a problem, making sure it flowed from one side to the other. lots and lots of layers and heat setting.

mail prep 19

I needed to make some goodies for the inside so I made this little gift pouch.

So now the pretty pictures. I am still trying to figure out the camera and I took pictures both inside and out. I have better lighting with outside.

I covered up the face of the pocket watch with some tape while I sprayed.

You can see the texture paste close up here. Still a learning curve with that.

My little packages I made, and some home made envelopes that Sigita Grunte posed on FB. They were so cute I had to try my hand at them.

I used some goodies from the December kit to add to the effect.

I wanted to do something a little different seeing I thought there would be a fair number of Christmas themed mailboxes. I need to give it to my awesome mail lady Janice who puts up with my deliveries and my kids always breaking into her jaw breaker stash in her mail truck.

Thank you for stopping by today.

It’s great. Did you use everything from the Flying Unicorn kit on this? I was thinking of joining the KOM but still have reservations. Need to make sure the kit is worth what i’m paying for it.
