Up-cycled  Bread Box

I am so excited to share my first publication in Mixed-Up Magazine. Squeal.

The original bread, I picked up at a thrift sale. I new I wanted to alter it in some way to go in my new kitchen . It was very plain and there was really nothing  exciting about it.

I started with a couple coats of gesso, just to prime the base of my project.

I added some subtle texture with a stencil and brushed on some gesso.

I sporadically applied through the whole box.

After it dried,  I choose my earthy colours to match my kitchen. I also used and iridescent medium to help blend the colours.

Lots of blending and I did add a little water to the palette to assist with the blending of the colours.

I added a mould to the handle for some extra details.

I raided my stash of thrift sale finds and buys and my costume jewelry to start adding all of the details.

I wanted to add some texture around the composition so I added a thick layer of graphite paste,  also to help hold the pieces in place while they dried.

I used antique spoons, and knives. Handles from my old kitchen cupboards and old jewelry, from various necklaces, earrings an bracelets.

After letting it set over night. I applied a thick layer of white gesso around each of the focal points.

I choose some colours that would match but still make the center points pop. I dry brushed a various colours from a copper colour, deep purple to black and gold.

After all of my highlighting was done it was time to blend the focal points back into the bread box base. I got out the same colours I used originally and began blending again with dry brushing with some hogs hair brushes.

I love the look that I achieved with the alteration, I think it stands out. And it works perfect with all of my other actin my kitchen.
